Water or liquid-damaged camera: first steps that matter

Liquid and cameras don't mix — but quick, correct action gives you the best chance of a saving a wet camera or lens. What you do in the first few minutes matters more than anything.

Do this immediately

Switch the camera off straight away and remove the battery — leaving power connected while wet is what causes lasting corrosion and short circuits. Remove the memory card and lens too, and pour out any standing water.

Wipe the outside dry and keep the camera in a cool, dry place. The faster it's opened, cleaned and dried professionally, the better the outcome — corrosion starts within hours, especially with salt water or sugary drinks.

What to avoid

Don't switch it on to 'test' it — that's the most common way a recoverable camera is lost. Don't charge it. The rice trick does little for the internals and can leave dust and starch inside; it's not a substitute for proper cleaning.

Get it to a workshop quickly. We can open, clean and dry the internals, treat corrosion, and tell you honestly what's recoverable.

If your camera gets wet:

  • Power off and remove the battery immediately
  • Remove the card and lens; pour out standing water
  • Do NOT switch it on or charge it to test
  • Keep it cool and dry; skip the rice
  • Get it to a workshop as fast as possible

Frequently asked questions

My camera got wet — can it still be saved?

Often, if you act fast: power off, remove the battery, and get it professionally cleaned and dried before corrosion sets in. Outcomes are much better for clean water than salt water or sugary drinks, and much better the sooner it's treated.

Should I put my wet camera in rice?

It's not reliable — rice draws out little internal moisture and can leave dust and starch inside. Proper opening, cleaning and drying gives a far better chance.
