Clicks but no photo, or a jammed shutter
If the camera fires but captures nothing, shows a half-black frame, or the shutter is visibly stuck part-way, the shutter mechanism or its timing is likely at fault. On DSLRs a stuck mirror can look similar.
Don't repeatedly fire a jammed shutter or try to move the blades by hand — that can bend them. It's a workshop repair.
Error codes and shutter-count wear
Many cameras report a specific error when the shutter fails (for example an 'Err' relating to the shutter or mechanism). Every shutter is also rated for a number of actuations; well-used bodies can reach the end of that life and need a shutter-unit replacement.
We can read the shutter count where the model allows, confirm whether a compatible shutter unit is available, and quote before replacing it.
Before a shutter repair, note:
- Whether it fires with no image, or is physically stuck
- Any error code shown on the screen
- Roughly how much the camera has been used
- Your exact model, so we can check shutter-unit availability
- Don't force a jammed shutter by hand
